I don't mind saying it. I hope the Pacers take out the Heat. #overrated

And the winner is…

Feb 1, 2009 11:24 pm by Paul Jenkins in Culture, Sports

Sure, the Steelers beat the Cardinals on the field. But which commercial was the best?

#5: Bridgestone. Having Mrs. Potato Head’s lips come off was funny.
#4: CareerBuilder.com. It was like moss. It grew on me.
#3: Coke Zero. The remake of the Mean Joe Greene commercial being interrupted by the Coke Zero guys was a nice, unexpected twist.
#2: Doritos. The Crystal Ball commercial made me laugh out loud.
#1: Miller High Life. As much as I hate to award this to a beer company, you’ve got to love the one-second commercial by a company “in these tough economic times.” (Geez, can you tell I’ve heard that phrase a million times?)

Super Bowl Commercials – Second Half

Feb 1, 2009 9:27 pm by Paul Jenkins in Culture, Sports

These are the commercials that were shown during the second half of the Super Bowl (and yes, I’m still amazed at that 100 yard interception return for a touchdown at the end of the first half).

Okay, here we go.

8:26:01 – Miller High Life – Their much promised 1 second commercial. I deem it the winner for the creativity.

———-

8:36 – Coke – STUPID!
8:36 – Bridgestone – not much better
8:37 – Denny’s – Great commercial, especially the creative way they poked fun at IHOP.
8:38 – Monster.com – Great one! Wouldn’t you hate to be the guy working on the wrong side of the wall??

———-

8:40 – Budweiser (Coming to America) – I think they’ve run this into the ground
8:41 – Race to Witch Mountain trailer – This one looks good

———-

8:57 – Transformers trailer – this will be a good movie
8:57 – CareerBuilder.com – Great, great commercial. In the top 5 so far!

———-

9:00 – Coca Cola – Very creative
9:01 – Frosted Flakes – nice gesture on Kellog’s part

———-

9:05 – NFL.com SuperAd – Usama never wanted to serve snow cones! He wanted to be on the field – and now he is.
9:07 – Jack in the Box – Oh, the drama! Will Jack survive? Will he end world terrorism? Oh, wait, this isn’t Jack Bauer. I couldn’t care less about a fast food chain named after Jack.

———-

Just local commercials during this break, and they weren’t even worth commenting on.

———-

9:17 – Coke Zero – Troy and the Coke Zero guys doing their version of the Mean Joe Greene Coca Cola commercial from way back in the day! This one was AWESOME!!!
9:18 – Cash4Gold – Ed McMahon needed to sell his gold. ‘Nuff said.

———-

9:22 – Vizio – They really are a dood TV.
9:22 – Taco Bell – Yeah, that would freak most girls out.
9:23 – GE – The Wizard of Oz Scarecrow? Really? Oh, my.

———-

9:26 – Hulu – Hmmm. Methinks they really DO want to turn our brains to mush. Anyone else feeling that, too?

———-

9:32 – GE – Okay, the wind commercial was funny.
9:32 – Pepsi – McGruber, well, PepSuber, was pretty funny.

———-

9:52 – Bud Lime – I’m tired of seeing “pretty” people acting cool cuz they’re holding a drink that smells like pee.
9:54 – GoDaddy – let it go, guys.

Super Bowl Commercials – First Half

Feb 1, 2009 7:53 pm by Paul Jenkins in Culture, Sports

My running comments about the commercials in this year’s Super Bowl. Here are the ones in the first half.

6:39 – Bud Light (Budget meeting) – the chair through the window with the guy IN IT was funny.
6:40 – Audi – STUPID and pointless
6:43 – Pepsi (Forever Young) – very creative, one of my faves so far
6:44 – Doritos (Crystal Ball) – okay, this one is my favorite now

———-

6:51 – Bud Light (Conan) – Not that funny. I was let down.
6:52 – Crackle trailer – Hope that movie’s as funny as it looks
6:52 – Toyota Venza – I am most definitely NOT Venza

———-

7:01 – Bridgestone – Nice seeing her lips fall off. Mr. Potato head was a happy man, err, potato!
7:02 – Fast and Furious trailer – ho, hum. Nothing original here.
7:03 – Castrol – I was liking it until the man/monkey kiss. Yuck!

———-

7:05 – Land of the Lost trailer – Will Ferrell is a funny man.
7:06 – Doritos – not as good as the first one, but okay.
7:07 – GoDaddy – whatever. When will they realize I’m not a Jr. Higher in puberty.

———-

7:09 – Pepsi Max – Loved it
7:09 – Pedigree – Not bad, especially the Grandma in the backseat with the wart hog
7:10 – Budweiser (Fetch) – horse bringing back the tree limb was a nice touch

———-

7:12 – Budweiser (Daisy and Romeo) – love always finds a way
7:13 – Star Trek trailer – Oh, yeah, and I’m not even a trekkie

———-

7:22 – Gatorade – I don’t like these very much
7:22 – Cars.com – David Abernathy was a very smart guy. Too bad he’s an idiot when it comes to car buying, because smart people buy USED!

———-

7:35 – Hyundai Genesis – Loved this one!
7:36 – E*Trade – “What? I can’t flex the golden pipes?” GREAT COMMERCIAL!!

———-

7:38 – Up trailer – I love Pixar! This could be a great movie.
7:39 – Bud Light Skiing – Matt Miller skis like that second guy even without the hand drawn trees in the way

———-

7:41 – H & R Block Grim Reaper – stupid
7:42 – Teleflora.com – Now that was a great commercial

———-

7:47 – Cheetos – Tell the truth. How many of us have been near people like here that made us what to do the same thing?

Wolfpack making a run

Jan 31, 2009 5:56 pm by Paul Jenkins in Sports

They’ve been down big, but now they’re within 8. Let’s see what happens…

Well, what happened is Carolina is too freakin strong.

Great time with the guys

I had a great time with a group of pastors touring the Bobcats arena. Sydney came along too, since she wasn’t feeling good.

The tour was brief and we didn’t see Michael Jordan. Oh well.
