Stuck in the shallows

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I remember watching a movie called “The Shallows” that was a bit of a far-fetched story about a girl surfing who got stuck on some rocks in the shallow part of the ocean and couldn’t get out because a great white shark had also gotten stuck there.

You really have to wonder who’s running these idea meetings in Hollywood, don’t you? I mean, when could something like that ever happen?

But the more I’ve thought about it, the more I realize that many people are actually stuck in the shallows. They want a deep life that is significant and fruitful and yet they aren’t willing to take the risk to escape the shallowness of their own lives. There isn’t a shark in the shallows but there is an enemy of the soul who prowls around like a roaring lion and wants to do all he can to intimidate and convince people to stay where they are.

Just like in the movie, safe seems like a great option until we realize that safety can’t sustain us. There is life to be lived, but to live it, we’ve got to be willing to leave the safety of the shallows.

Be resolute. Take the plunge and swim like crazy until you’ve left the shallows behind.

The deep is calling.
