I lit the candle, and watched it burn.
I brewed the coffee, and sipped it slowly.
I opened my writing app, and stared at the cursor as it blinked, waiting for me to type.
And yet, I had nothing but a soul weariness. The kind that makes forming words hard, let alone words that make sentences or even sense. And so, I read the words of One far greater than I, and something happened as I did.
They brought life, and hope, and peace.
And a beautiful reminder about the tender hands of a Surgeon who knows how to heal, and as I read them, I thought of my dad, who did this countless times over his surgical career.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV, emphasis mine)
Too many people use the Word of God as an axe, cutting and tearing things apart with truth. They use verses as a means of exposing people’s sins or weaknesses. But as I read these verses today, God reminded me that the Word is a scalpel in His hands, and that He uses it to cut us open so that He can see the deep places that need healing.
Look at that last verse again. “Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him…”
Dark seasons of the soul don’t scare Him, nor should they scare those of us who have placed our souls in His hands for His care. He knows how to use His Word, and when we allow Him to, He’ll uncover and heal the places that need His touch the most.
