If you’ve lived longer than a nanosecond, then you already know that it’s very difficult to choose our emotions. This is one reason why followers of Jesus often misunderstand verses like this one.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4 NIV)
We read that and think it’s a lot like the song lyrics that tell us don’t worry, be happy, or we consider it to be a response to happy situations.
But it’s a command to make a choice in all circumstances to be joyful, and if we’re really living out the meaning of the original Greek word, it means we’re going to be exceedingly joyful. Truly, followers of Jesus are full of joy, regardless of what is happening around us.
Today, choose joy. Choose to rejoice because He has come, and He has brought joy to a world that is in great need of great joy.
