Cold rains and Valentines

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Nothing disappoints me more than cold rain. Water falling from the sky with temperatures hovering one or two degrees above freezing is a waste because it could have been snow. I’ll find myself saying how that inch of cold rain would have been a foot of snow if only that cold front had pushed down a little further south.

Cold rain for me is a near miss.

Valentine’s Day can be the same thing for some. A reminder of they are close to love as couples all around them exchange cards and candy or simply exchange glances that say, “You are loved by me.”

It can leave people thinking that they, too, could be loved like that if only they were funny enough, tall enough, whole enough, healthy enough, whatever else you want to put here enough.

Valentine’s Day for many is a near miss.

But it doesn’t have to be. Let the world have its Hallmark moment and let the 14th day of February remind you of a love that requires no “if onlys” of you. Jesus loves you just as you are. You don’t need to be anyone or anything different to experience the life-changing love of God. Today, and every day, He wants to be near you, and His love is a can’t miss kind of love, not the near miss kind of love that the world offers.
