My morning routine is pretty solid. An early morning run listening to a book, a cup of coffee or two while I pray and read the Bible, and then writing. Most of it happens in the same places. Running happens outside (because treadmills are just, no!), coffee and Jesus time is on the couch, and writing is at my desk.
But this morning, I couldn’t get up from the couch to go write because my sweet friend, Bella, had curled up in my lap and I didn’t want to disturb her. So, I’m writing and posting this from my phone.
Technology is pretty sweet, and it can help us find a way to do what matters most. But it can’t help us figure out what matters most. Finding what matters most happens in quieter ways like solitude and rest. For me, it happens on dark roads early in the morning and on comfortable couches holding the Bible and a mug full of coffee. Those are the abiding places that fuel the writing that comes later, even if it comes on a phone instead of at a desk.
When we know what matters most, we’ll find a way to get it done. Until we do, we’ll probably just find an excuse.
