A handful of years ago (maybe it was two handfuls?), I read a book entitled, “Good to Great.” It was about the things that made the difference between one business being good and another in the same sector being great.
It was an insightful book, for sure, but it wasn’t the first time the world had heard of good to great.
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” (Luke 2:10, emphasis mine)
Good news that led to great joy. That’s a true good to great story, and a key understanding for all of us as well.
The good news is the gospel. The announcement and acceptance of a King born as a baby in a manger in order to die as a savior on a cross. That’s the path to great joy, and that kind of joy can’t be found anywhere else or in anything else. Great joy comes through the good news.
Of course, that doesn’t stop people from trying to find joy without the good news, but it won’t be a joy that lasts or that seems great. That kind of joy comes only when we receive the good news.
