It’s easy at times to slip into a mindset that just making it to heaven allows us to hear God say, “Well done.”
But God reserves those words for the faithful servants, not for just any servants.
Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. (Matthew 25:14-18 NIV, emphasis mine)
All three were servants, but only the first two heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (see verses 21 and 23).
As followers of Jesus, we have been gifted by the Master according to our abilities. He isn’t asking a servant with a one bag gifting to produce as much as someone with a five bag gifting. But don’t be deceived. He expects us to use the gifts we’ve been given to grow the kingdom.
No one is sliding into heaven in a recliner and hearing the words “well done.” Let’s adjust our lives accordingly.
Selah.
