Muscle memory is an interesting phenomenon. It’s not that our muscles have actual memories, but rather that our muscles can be trained through repetition to “remember” how to perform specific motor tasks.
Think of it like autopilot for your body and mind. It’s how you were able to drive to work this morning and not actually think about the estimated 160 driving decisions you were making every mile. Your mind has built a bank of knowledge that allows it to process the most important or more recent information without being overwhelmed with everything else.
It’s like having money in the bank. It’s there if you need it, but you don’t have to think about it all the time.
I think it also applies to our souls. We build up a knowledge and experience bank of God’s faithfulness over the years, and that allows us to process new events with the “down deep” peace of already knowing who God is. Sure, we might wonder how a current circumstance is going to work out for our good, but we aren’t spending head and heart space wondering if it will work out for our good because we’ve seen God do that plenty of times before.
Selah.
