Palming the universe
You ever heard that song about how God has the whole world in His hands? It’s true, but not the whole truth.
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? (Isaiah 40:12 NIV, emphasis mine)
The song makes it sound like He’s got the world and only the world in His hands, but God is so big that He has the world and everything else in His hand. Singular, not plural. He is literally palming the universe, and while that is mind-blowing in scope, here’s the best part.
You and I aren’t lost in all of that.
I can lose something small in something big, and I’m sure you can, too. It’s basically where the needle in a haystack saying comes from. But not God. The One who palms the universe sees and knows each one of us. He knows the number of our days and the number of hairs on our heads. He is ultimately in control of everything and intimately involved in everything. His power is great, His mercy is new, and He hasn’t lost sight of anyone, anywhere, at anytime.
He’s got it all in His hand, and that means He’s got you and me, too.
