Running Rewind: April 2011

Reading Time: < 1 minute

April turned into the worst running month of the new year for me.  There are lots of possible reasons: recovery from my huge PR in the DC Half Marathon last month, the week-long vacation down in Charleston after running the Cooper River Bridge Run, the onslaught of early summer heat, or what feels like a possible abdominal strain.  It could be one, all, or none of the above, but for whatever reason, April was a grind.

I did finish with more miles than any other April since I started running (barely!), set a PR at a pretty cool run over a bridge, and celebrated my 3rd runniversary.  So, there’s that.  But on the downside, I just haven’t felt like I’ve had any running rhythm at all and I haven’t felt like doing any speed work, which means I’ve only done 2 tempo runs in the month. I also finished quite a bit behind the mileage I need if I’m going to meet my goal of 2,011 miles in 2011.  There’s still time to catch up, but many more months like this one and it may not be within reach.

I’m sure when it’s all said and done, this month will just be a speed bump on the road to meeting my long-term goals.  I’m not sweating it.

Rewind stats:

  • Total miles: 115.9
  • Average per week: 28.9
  • Races: 1
  • New records: 10K (52:05 – a 2:17 improvement)
  • Consecutive triple-digit months: 14
