Seeing red

I’m not sure if you noticed it, but the stock market dropped a lot recently. Ok, a lot may be an understatement. The DOW is down 10% since December, and the NASDAQ is down 20% in the same period.
It’s got many people seeing red, and I think it’s a great time to ask ourselves where we stand on these words written by the Holy Spirit through David:
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. (Psalms 20:7, emphasis mine)
Economic uncertainty happens. This isn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last. And the point of that verse isn’t to shame any of us for feeling some type of way about all the red numbers we’ve seen on tickers over the last week. Rather, the point of that verse is to challenge each of us with what we do now.
Faith gets revealed when foundations crumble. For those trusting in horses and chariots, things are great until those sources rust and die. For those trusting in God, horses and chariots are still wonderful, but when they fail, faith doesn’t falter because that faith is placed in One much stronger than animals and vehicles.
This, then, is where the church can shine! I noticed a chart on a website that read “extreme fear is driving the US markets” and I immediately asked God to help me — and you — to stand as a non-anxious presence for those who find themselves in a vortex of panic.
Many around us are seeing red. Let’s be the ones who help them see the green pastures and the blue waters that the Good Shepherd wants to lead them to.
