The wrong well
I love the story of Jesus meeting with the woman at the well in Samaria. It’s found in John 4 and I seem to write about it every so often because it is such a deep well (pun intended) of revelation.
This morning, I am captivated by the answer Jesus gave to the woman when He offered her something better than the same old religious thing she and her ancestors had been drinking.
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 NLT)
Jesus was talking to a woman who had tapped out, a woman who had bought the lie that her lot in life was to go from one man to another in hopes of finding love. He was talking to a woman whose daily tasks were made more difficult by the shame that forced her to avoid the early morning crowds at the well. He was talking to a woman who was continually thirsty, continually working for more water, and was never satisfied.
His answer? Tap into another source, and she would never be thirsty again. Translation? She’d been going to the wrong well all that time.
Maybe you’ve found religion frustrating and life devastating? Perhaps you can relate to the day in and day out routine of this woman who was searching for something significant in a well that had nothing significant to offer? I’ve got good news! There is another well, and when you tap into that well, you will gush with the goodness and the glory of God!
The Messiah wasn’t coming to the woman at the well. He was there, right in front of her, offering her what she had always craved. May I say this boldly and prophetically to you today? Revival isn’t coming. Revival is here, right in front of you, and it offers you the overflow of His presence that you have always craved.
Put your bucket down into that well, and you will never run out.
